Henry F. Edelhauser, Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Ophthalmic Research, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia USA.  Dr. Edelhauser received a Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 1966 and became a professor at the Department of Physiology and Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.  In 1989 he became the Ferst Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Ophthalmic Research at Emory University.  He has served as President of ARVO (1991), and has received many distinguished awards honor such as the senior achievement award (2000) from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Castroviejo Medal, the Alcon Research Award (1999), the R. Townley Paton M.D. award (2007) from the Eye Bank Association of America and in 2005 he received the prestigious Proctor Medal Award, ARVO highest honor in Ophthalmic Research.   

Dr. Edelhauser’s research includes corneal endothelial physiology, surgical pharmacology, ocular drug delivery and toxicology.  He has been involved in developing intraocular irrigating solutions (BSS Plus) for phacoemulsification and vitrectomy and his research has bridged the gap in many areas between the laboratories to the clinic. He and Nick Mamalis, M.D. Moran Eye Center, Co-Chaired the 2006 Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS) Task force to establish guideline for “Recommends Practices for Cleaning and Sterilizing Intraocular Surgical Instruments”.
